A fireplace damper allows smoke to escape and air to enter the hearth, facilitating wood combustion.

When the fireplace is in use, an open damper allows sufficient oxygen to enter and prevents smoke from filling the room. By altering the amount the damper is opened or closed, one can better control conduction speed. When the fire is out, the damper must be kept closed to prevent cold air from entering the home.
